The Wonder Foods that make you even more Lovable!
Be totally irresistible. To send your man head over heels for you (again!), share a shrimp appetizer on your next dinner date. The zinc in shellfish produces gustin, a salivary gland protein that strengthens the sense of smell, says Robert Henkin, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Taste and Smell Clinic at the Center for Molecular Nutrition and Sensory Disorders in Washington, D.C. This heightens your ability to tune in to each other's pheromones, body chemicals that enhance attraction, say Henkin.
Make everyone feel special. Next time a friend stops by for some advice, set out a bowl of almonds before your heart-to-heart. The magnesium in these nuggets improves concentration, so you'll instantly be a more engaged listener. Magnesium activates nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, an enzyme that metabolizes protein and carbohydrates to fuel the brain and amp up alertness, says Caroly Dean, M.D., N.D., author of The Miracle of Magnesium (Ballantine, 2003). Other sources: cashews, hazelnuts, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds.
Shrug off stress by consuming more vitamin C. This vitamin helps balance levels of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that governs emotions, explains Don Colbert, M.D., author of Stress Less (Siloam Press, 2005). And that balance is the key to remaining calm or even cheerful during stressful situations, says Colbert. Super-rich C sources include kiwifruit, strawberries, red peppers and broccoli. And one serving is all it takes to rebalance and feel ready for anything!
Keep on the sunny side. To help ensure undying optimism, fill up on foods high in folate. Subjects in one Finnish study who were lacking this B vitamin had triple the risk of blue moods. Folate helps the brain maintain high levels of the feel-good chemical serotonin, notes Mark Hyman, M.D., author of Ultra-Metabolism (Scribner, 2006). Food sources like kidney beans, asparagus and avocados can turn up the wattage on a fading smile.
